What is IV Sedation?
Some people can’t even fathom thinking about stepping into a dentist’s office. Because of their dental phobia, they rarely, if ever, see a dentist, and their oral health pays for it. Fortunately, is a great tool for calming down patients who become very anxious at the dentist. IV sedation is a form of conscious sedation that allows even the most fearful of patients to feel calm and relaxed during a dentist visit.
How does it work?
If you’re feeling afraid when you arrive for your appointment, don’t worry. IV sedation is known for its quick effects, so you won’t have to feel anxious during your visit. The IV sedation is injected into a vein on your wrist or arm and remains there for the remainder of the procedure. If you’re afraid of needles, there’s no need to panic. Patients describe the IV sedation as just a small pinch, and that’s all. If you’re still concerned about the needle, there areyou can choose.
IV sedation allows your dentist to increase and decrease the medication as needed throughout the entire procedure. Once the IV is in, your fears will immediately begin to fade and you won’t feel bothered by the procedure.
Will I be conscious?
You will be conscious when given IV sedation. You’ll be completely responsive and able to communicate with your dentist during the procedure. You’ll be able to answer questions and do what your dentist instructs you to do. Though you will be awake throughout the procedure, you’ll feel very relaxed and won’t be bothered by what’s going on, even if you have .
What happens after?
Once the procedure is finished, your dentist will detach the IV from your arm or hand and the sedation effects will begin to wear off. Though the effects will diminish shortly after removing the IV, it’s recommended that you should not drive or operate any heavy machinery for at least 24 hours after being sedated. You’ll want to be sure to bring someone along to your appointment so they can safely drive you home.
Another one of the great advantages of intravenous sedation is that the patient will have little to no recollection of the dental procedure. This is particularly beneficial for those with dental anxiety. Because they won’t remember what happened during their visit to the dentist, they won’t have any bad memories to intensify their existing fear.
Whether it’s for an invasive dental procedure or something as simple as a regular cleaning, IV sedation is one of the best ways to calm patients down during their visit. If you experience dental anxiety, ask your dentist about using intravenous sedation during your next appointment.
